“The Two-Tier System In Tests; We Don’t Agree”, Says BCCI

The honorable Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has shown its utter discontentment for the proposal of a two-tier system in the tests. In the conviction that the economic value of bilateral series amongst the permanent board members had been losing grounds, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had decided to hold up a meeting in Dubai with the same topic.

Earlier, ICC had put forward the idea of two-tier system with the faith that it would certainly help the deteriorating condition of the test matches, which currently receives a meager acknowledgement from the world.

Under this, they tried to divide the ten test playing nations into two groups: the Full Members and the Associate Members. The group members would be divided into the two sections according to their points and ranks. A few good series could promote the lower ranked team into the top group while for the top guns, they could be demoted to the bottom on account of a few losses.

The ICC is said to summon a special meeting at its headquarters to carry on the considerations and plans that were made in the Edinburgh. This meeting would be held for 2 days, 6th and 7th of September.

Their proposal to offer a new beginning to the test cricket would involve 12 teams in the table. 7 of the top ranked teams would receive a place in the top tier while 5 others would be offered a place in the Associate Members, which includes new teams such as Afghanistan and Ireland.

At the meeting, BCCI is all set to reject this sort of a proposal from the ICC and is receiving the support of 5 other countries’ cricket boards including Sri Lankan Cricket Board, Zimbabwe Cricket, Bangladesh Cricket, West Indies Cricket and Pakistan Cricket board.

A source from the BCCI reveals, “There's a clear divide bordering on serious financial disruptions, which the ICC is overlooking at the moment." “If it's only about money, then India should play only England and Australia, no? As it is there are only ten Test playing nations and even in that you want to have a divide." He adds.

The ICC international cricket calendar reveals of atleast a single ICC event every year. Whether it is the 50 over world cup, the T20 world cup or even the Champions Trophy, all the tournaments are far more exciting than any of the two-sided test series. How come dividing teams in groups would help the dwindling interest of the test cricket?

Probably, the Permanent members, India, Australia and England would be fine in the two-tier system but this would not do well to the rights sales of the smaller cricket boards as per the Latest Sport News.

Therefore, BCCI is prepared to disagree on the norms of two-tier system and decides to reject it in the following summon.

The test playing teams and their current rankings are as tabulated above.
