A Brief Introduction to Electronics and Communication Engineering

Electronics and Communication Engineering or B. Tech in Electronics and Communication is a four-year degree course, which is divided into eight semesters. This program aims at preparing the students to work in the electronics and communication industry as engineers. The things that we use in our daily lives such as FM radios, mobile phones, TV, computers, etc., would not have became possible without the contribution of EC engineers. Also, the big things such as satellites, radar systems, internet, wireless technology, robotics, and many more, require the application of electronics and communication engineering. The EC engineers basically research, design, develop, and test the equipment used in various electronic and/or communication systems.

Eligibility

To pursue the EC engineering from a reputable university or college, you have to score at least 65% in aggregate in the 12th standard, and minimum 60% in PCM. Then, you also have to score well in the JEE or other relevant entrance examination to be called for counseling in a particular university.

Curriculum

The curriculum or syllabus of B. Tech (ECE) is quite detailed. Though there are variations in the curriculum of different universities, but broadly it is the same. There is a combination of both theory and practical to fully prepare the students for the actual work field. The primary subjects included in the ECE curriculum are following:

  • Engineering Mathematics

  • Engineering Physics

  • Engineering Graphics

  • Computer Fundamentals & Programming

  • Electrical Science

  • Engineering Mechanics

  • Environment Science

There are many other subjects in addition to those mentioned above. There are generally seven to eight subjects per semester.

Career Prospects

The career prospects in electronics and communication are bright in India. There are many renowned companies in the field of electronics and communication in India which require capable EC Engineers to stay ahead in competition. Have a look at the following points to better understand the career prospects or scope in the ECE field:

There are ample job opportunities for electronics and communication engineers in the consumer electronics industry, telecommunications and IT industry, internet technology industry, healthcare equipment manufacturing, and industries such as power, steel, and petroleum.

After B. Tech (ECE), you may land a decent job in both public and private sector. You may get employment in the DMRC, DRDO, Indian Railways, AAI, and more. In the private sector, the big recruiters for EC engineers are HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Cognizant, Nvidia, Samsung, Philips, and many others.

The EC engineers can specialize in a particular area such as mobile systems, internet technology, integrated circuits, medical equipment, maintenance and installation of electronic systems, etc., and start their own business or company.

If a candidate pursues higher studies in electronics and communication such as M. Tech or Ph.D, he she may enter the teaching and research fields.

Possible Job Titles

After completing your electronics and communication engineering, you may expect to get one of the following job titles in various industries:

  • Service Engineer;

  • Software Analyst;

  • Network Engineer;

  • ASIC Design Engineer;

  • Quality Assurance Engineer;

  • R&D Engineer; and, many more.

Salary Package

The average salary in the electronics and communication engineering field for a fresher in India ranges from INR 3 lakhs to INR 5 lakhs, depending upon the candidate. Whereas the salary packages offered to graduates from top engineering institutions of the country such as the IITs and NITs is on a higher end, which is INR 11 lakhs to 25 lakhs.

If you are a resident of Uttarakhand, there are several good engineering colleges there. You can pursue your Electronics and Communication Engineering in Dehradun. There are some colleges that provide reservation benefit to the candidates from Uttarakhand.
