Tomas Rekem – Life after Slovakia

Tomas Rekem is an adventurous and active individual. He was born and raised in Slovakia before immigrating to Canada at the age of 13 with the rest of his family in 1999. They all moved to Port Credit, Mississauga in Ontario, Canada. He and his brother Matt attended Port Credit Secondary School in Mississauga. He was a member of the high school soccer team and played in defense for the Mississauga club soccer team.

After Tomas Rekem graduated high school in 2004, he began college at the University of Toronto. During his time at the University of Toronto, he worked for the Provincial Offences Officer for The Ontario Food Terminal Board in Etobicoke. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 2009 and received Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History, a minor in Canadian Studies, and a minor in Czech and Slovak Studies. Upon graduation, he was offered a full-time position with the Ontario Food Terminal and held that position for two years. He now works for a Property Management company in an administrative role.

In his free time, Tomas Rekem loves to stay active. He still enjoys playing soccer, but he now knows how to box and play hockey. He mostly plays hockey in his free time during the winter months. He trained at the Training Ground Thai Boxing Academy for seven years and participated in a number of amateur fights. He finished his amateur boxing career with a 2 – 2 record.

You will often find Tomas Rekem scratching is adventurous itch through traveling abroad and in Canada. He loves that Canada has so much outdoor adventure to offer. He likes to go camping or rent a cottage so that he can hike, fish, or go boating. His favorite place to travel abroad is Asia and he recently went to Malaysia, Bali, Thailand, Philippines, and Cambodia. He finds the experience of a new culture to be exhilarating, and his adventurous personality allows him to try new and different foods while on his travels.

Although Tomas Rekem loves his new Canadian home, he will never let his Slovak roots escape him. He can read, write, and speak fluently in both Czech and Slovak. Although he speaks English with his friends and colleagues, while, with his parents, he speaks Slovak to ensure that his mother tongue stays sharp. As a big NHL fan, he enjoys keeping track of the progress that the Slovakian players are making in the league. His favorite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he would rather see a fellow Slovakian do well than his hometown team.
