Packet-filtering firewalls function at the router and compare each packet that is received to fixed criteria, for example, permitted IP addresses and port numbers before the packet is either ignored or sent forward.
Circuit-level gateways monitor the TCP “handshaking” process that takes place between local and remote hosts in order to determine if the session is trusted. The packets itself are not inspected.
Stateful inspection firewalls, on the contrary, do not only assess each packet but keeps a record of whether the packet is part of trusted TCP session. This process offers more security than packet filtering or circuit monitoring. However, it does take a greater overall toll on the network.
Application-level gateways or proxies work by combining the attributes of packet-filtering firewalls and circuit-level gateways. The process involves filtering packets not only according to the service as specified by the destination port but by various other factors such as HTTP request string.
